Je moet gewoon een ondeugd in je werkplaats hebben, het is praktisch je derde hand die verschillende dingen echt op zijn plaats houdt. Een bankschroef moet natuurlijk altijd van goede kwaliteit zijn en vrij stabiel. Gietijzer of een gesmeed stalen model is van hoge kwaliteit en deze modellen zijn ook solide en stabiel. Beide materialen zijn duurzaam, maar ze moeten worden beschermd tegen roest. Met goede zorg gaan de ondeugden een leven lang mee, goedkope modellen zijn perfect geschikt voor de hobbyman.
U moet zich vertrouwd maken met een aantal basisgegevens voordat u koopt, want elk product is anders, dus u moet goed vergelijken en precies het model kiezen dat bij u past en goed werk levert in uw huis en tuin. Zorg ervoor dat de kaken kunnen worden vervangen, want bij zware slijtage hoeft u niet de hele bankschroef te vervangen. In de meeste gevallen worden de kaken aan het lichaam vastgeschroefd en kunnen ze gemakkelijk worden vervangen. Dit is echter niet het geval bij zeer hoogwaardige ondeugden. Als de bankschroef kan worden gezwenkt, is dat des te beter. Want als er op dit moment niet aan gewerkt wordt, kan het worden afgewend en staat het dus niet in de weg.
